You laugh. You frown. You concentrate. You look but donít feel angry, tired or worried. And over time, those expressions leave their negative mark on your face. Until recently there wasnít a lot you could do about it. Today, with Botox cosmetic, a simple, safe, non-surgical procedure even the toughest wrinkle can be reduced within days. One ten minute treatment with a few tiny injections relaxes the muscles that cause the lines and wrinkles and keeps them relaxed for up to four months. As an added benefit, many people report a significant decline in frequency and severity of tension related headaches.
WHAT IS BOTOX?
Botox Cosmetic, sometimes referred to "a facelift in a bottle", is a natural, purified protein that relaxes muscles by blocking nerve impulses. This relaxing of musles allows the skin to smooth out persistent lines which developed over time. The relaxation usually lasts three to four months before the muscles return to their original state. Results are dramatic, and apparent within days and unlike surgery, the procedure is fast, simple and minimally invasive. Botox injections are very small and done with an ultra fine needle that causes minimal discomfort. Most people compare the sensation to a light pinch or mosquito bite.
WHERE IS BOTOX COSMETIC USED?
It is most effective for forehead wrinkles (glabellar lines) that are visible when smiling, laughing, frowning or raising the eyebrows and for "crow's feet" lines around the eyes. Botox is purchased by the syringe and in "unit" amounts. The results achieved are related to the amount injected in the various sites, and the amounts required will vary from patient to patient. Your health care professional will assess the amount needed based on factors such as the strength and thickness of the muscle being treated, the depth of the wrinkle and previous Botox use.
AM I A CANDIDATE FOR BOTOX?
Anyone who is pregnant or breast feeding, has a neuromuscular disorder like myasthenia gravis, has an infection at the proposed injection site or is intolerant of human albumin (blood product) should not be treated with Botox. Others tolerate the procedure well with minimal effects and are able to return to their regular daily activities with no down time.
WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS OF BOTOX INJECTIONS?
Unfortunately, Botox injections are a temporary solution for the treatment of lines and wrinkles, so you will need to have injections two to three times a year, however, the duration of treatment benefits linger longer with each repeated injection so that you should require injections less frequently in the future. The duration of effect does vary amongst individuals, and may be less effective in patients over 65 years of age where fillers may be of more benefit.
WHAT IS HYPERHIDROSIS?
Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is a medical disorder involving hyperactive sweat glands in the armpits, palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Sweating is our body's natural temperature regulator. Severe hyperhidrosis defines individuals who sweat much more than the necessary requirement to maintain their optimal body temperature. It is often undiagnosed, misdiagnosed and untreated due to lack of awareness.
BOTOX INJECTIONS AND HYPERHIDROSIS
Recently, Botox has been found to offer a solution to those who suffer from hyperhidrosis which is localized to one or more of the following areas: underarms, hands, feet or face. Botox injections serve to interrupt the signal from the nerve to the sweat gland thereby dramatically reducing the sweating in that area. The injections are done with a very fine needle for the treatment of underarms, face and head without the need for anesthesia as the procedure is virtually painless. For treatment of the hands and soles of feet, local anesthesia is often used to avoid any injection discomfort. The effect can be immediate or take full effect within a week; the average duration of the effect is 6 to 7 months after a single treatment.
Consultations regarding BOTOX can usually be arranged within 24 hours simply by calling or sending us an e-mail. Treatment can often be done the same day as the consultation, if you wish, or at a later date.
